Dear Neighbor
We want to invite you to join us in creating a West Friendship Association to strengthen our voice on local issues and to work together on land use, environmental protection, public services, and preserving and improving the Willard Avenue Neighborhood Park to enhance our community.
Membership is open to owners and renters in the West Friendship area while associate membership is available for those living in the environs (see map below). Our goal is to promote civic engagement and awareness in our community and to provide support on matters of neighborhood concern. As a non-partisan and non-sectarian civic association we will work to enhance neighborly ties and cooperation.
As many of you know, a small group has been working since July 2022 to convince the Parks department and elected officials that Parks’ designation of the Willard Avenue Park as a suitable dog park site is wrong and that the turn of the twentieth century Reynolds’ House (the blue house at 5320 Willard) should be recognized and preserved for its historical and cultural value to the community and County.
The Willard Avenue Dog Park Project is on hold, for the moment. Parks says the house is being evaluated for historical designation, but there is no change in the Willard Avenue Park’s suitability for a dog park.
For now, 5320 Willard is still a rental house with the Parks Department overseeing its care.
Planning is underway for redeveloping Friendship Heights on both sides of the MD and DC border, including the Friendship Heights Urban Design Study now under way. We need to encourage those plans to better meet family recreational and pet needs.
Please join us in building the West Friendship Community Association. There’s no cost to join. Just send us an application with your name, rental/ownership status, address and email address to:
